Amy Tan's Heritage
Amy Tan’s heritage is clearly very dear to her because it made her who she is today. Her heritage were the vast meals that she would eat with her family, superstitions, and expectations. The superstitions were getting hit by a car and getting smashed flat that both your eyes end up on one side of your head and her expectations was getting an “A+” on all her classes. Her heritage was also secrets from her family that she didn’t discover until she was an adult. These secrets were the emotional core of her heritage, which made her know more about herself. Her heritage is significant to her as a writer because without it she wouldn’t be in the U.S enjoying various opportunities and living a life where she could actually become a writer. In China, one is limited to the things they can do. For Amy’s family to flee China and start a fresh new life in America, benefited her for life. Her heritage is significant to her as a daughter because it lets her embrace who she is and where she is from. It also made her appreciate her mother, who she thought was “wacky”, and made her realize that the way she acted was shared heritage. My heritage is drinking coffee at whatever time of day. It is also eating a great amount of rice, beans, and chicken. Like Amy Tan’s mother, my grandmother also left her country and was able to bring my mother and I with her. It gave me a chance to get an education which would’ve been much different if I would’ve grown up in the Dominican Republic. My family also had their superstitions, which were things like not wearing flip-flops in the house will make you sick. I thought that sounded ridiculous, but to this day I still walk around with my flip-flops in the house. I also thought that the way my mom acted was sort of crazy, but people from other races can also relate to me and my mother’s antics. My heritage is important to me because it is something that I would be able to share with my kids and something that I would always keep with me no matter where I go.
