Mass Incarceration

Mass incarceration is something that occurs greatly in the United States.” During the past 30 years, incarceration rates have risen by more than 300% (DeFina, Hannon. 2013)  Mass incarceration and different components such as race, age and income is my topic. The U.S has the highest population and highest rate of prisoners in the world. In his article, Chiao stated “At over 700 people in state custody per 100,000 residents, the United States incarcerates far more people than any other nation. The United States now incarcerates at a rate that is five times higher than a generation ago, and about five to ten times higher than is the norm in other liberal societies. The United States incarcerates over 20 % of the world’s inmate population—over two million individuals—despite having less than 5 % of the world’s population” (Chiao. 2015). Mass incarceration is something that many families deal with in the U.S. There seems to be a trend of minorities being the victims of these incarcerations. “It is difficult to comprehend that a nation such as the United States could realize such staggering statistics, but study after study emphasizes the disproportionate number of young Americans of color who are incarcerated” (Martensen. 2012). African Americans and non-White Hispanics tend to be to the target when it comes to this issue. Are there specific factors, other than crimes, that lead people to being victims of mass incarceration?


 For my research, I plan to try and answer the question myself and find articles that agree with my thoughts. My research strategy will be to find as many articles that include different factors and characteristics of victims of mass incarcerations and come to a conclusion of who is the most oppressed by this issue. I will be finding necessary information from different data bases and excerpts from books. I am discovering why many people get put in jail, aside from the crimes they commit. The layout of my paper will be separated into the different factors that I find. I will have an introduction, quickly get to my results and discussion, and thoroughly explain my findings. In regards to the shape of my paper, I wish to have an informative introduction and a large body with significant detail.

TED Talk on "How Simple Ideas Lead to Scientific Discoveries" by Adam Savage When watching the video, I was amazed at all the things these scientists were discovering but I was astounded learning that they were doing this more than 200 years ago. Each idea they wanted to solve, stemmed from a small little story that occurred to them. Also, I thought it was amazing that these scientists were doing these kinds of calculations with no calculator. This goes to show that anything can inspire someone to gain a certain interest or become something that relates to what they were inspired by. It was also great how when these scientists made calculations, they were only a small percentage off of the actual answer. If one watches a show based on math when their younger, they can catch an interest and maybe later in life solve one of the seven Millennium Prize Problems. Reflection to Final Version of Research Paper

Finishing my research paper was a challenge because I was running out of ideas. I felt if I kept writing I would get too repetitive or start to get out of topic. I included a good amount of ethos, pathos and logos to my paper to make it more exciting to read. I’m extremely glad that I finished the paper because I felt I wasn’t that knowledgeable in the topic and need to get this over with. Although my topic was out of my comfort zone, I feel I did a great job writing about something that is such a huge issue for many Americans. From the learning objectives, Invention and Inquiry is one that I obtained in my paper because I tried to explain every quote I used and discretely include m opinion. I, of course, learned the Writing Process because I wrote multiple drafts and revised adequately. Reflection to Final Version of Literacy Narrative

It was harder to keep trying to add things to my literacy narrative because I didn’t know whether it would enhance it or make it worse. In my final literacy narrative, I added more emotional appeal so that the writer can relate. Revising my work made me see where I had to be more specific in detail with certain things. My narrative was written to be more relatable to kids whose second language is English. Revising it, I also discovered that I am able to write sentences that correlate well with each other and that have a great flow. Course objectives I believe I met are invention and inquiry, writing process, sentence fluency, and conventions. Invention and inquiry because I was able to dig deeper and meaningfully write how I really felt about the topic of my narrative.
